Pro tip - Teach your dog to chill.

Posted by NATHAN WOODS on

Have you ever wanted your dog/puppy to go to a bed or mat, chew and chill when you are eating dinner, having company over, or on the computer?

Consider setting up stations or chill spots around your house or wherever you want your dog to lay down and relax. Set up the stations ahead of time so you don't have to scramble at the last minute looking for all the pieces.

Pick a stationary object such as a door knob, heavy piece of furniture, or hook in the wall. Make sure the area is clearly visible especially if you have a mischievous puppy. Do not leave your dog on these stations unattended.

Attach a four foot leash such as the ones above, (click the photo to order). If your have a chewer you might want to consider the chain leash. Make sure they can't access the nylon handle.

Use a collar or harness such as the ones above.

Set a mat or a bed within the station area such as the ones above. This serves as something comfortable to lay on as well as a visible zone for them to go to.
Lastly provide them with something to chew on for a while such as the chews above.
When you want them to go chill, simply say, enthusiastically a phrase of your choice such as, "Go to your bed" "Go lay down", "Go to your mat", or "Place". You can also give them a visual queue such as pointing.
Walk them over to the bed or mat, attach them to the leash, and let them learn to lay down, chill, and calmly enjoy their favorite chew.
They will quickly realize that this totally works. They get to be included, spend time with you, be cozy, and have their favorite chew.
