Pro tip - Teaching your dog to play frisbee

Posted by NATHAN WOODS on

Do you imagine your dog at a park or on the beach soaring through the air after a frisbee? This technique is best suited for dogs that are interested in toys and willing to carry them around. Do this in a cool safe area away from cars.
Use a 15 foot leash and a flat collar or harness such as the ones above, (click photo to order).
Nylon frisbees such as the one above are preferred because they are soft on the teeth and easy to throw.
With the 15 foot leash in one hand and the frisbee in the other, start by rolling it on its side to get the dog used to catching it while it is moving. When they grab it, enthusiastically say "FIDO, COME!" and reel them in with praise.
When they get close Command them to "Sit".  Practice this step for 1-2 weeks.
When they get that down start throwing it against the wind so they can succeed with catching it in the air. Practice this step for 1-2 weeks.
Finally try taking off the leash and gradually increase the distance and speed. If they are not succeeding back up to the step where they are for another week or two and then move forward.
Only say the command ONE TIME so they learn to do it the first time.
Here is a video of Tippy the Border Collie demonstrating the frisbee game. He always seems to find a way to catch it in the air.
Once they have mastered the frisbee, you can then add in balls and launchers such as the ones above, (click the photo to order).
